Magic Items

Every blue (magic) or yellow (rare) item in Diablo 2 is a base with affixes rolled on drop. The affix that goes before the name is the prefix, and the one after is the suffix. This page explains the roll rules; D2Evo's complete tables are in the tabs above.

  • Magic: up to 1 prefix and 1 suffix. The name is the affix itself, e.g., Sturdy Cap of Health.
  • Rare: 2 to 6 affixes, up to 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes, with a random name that says nothing about the attributes.
  • Crafted: made in the cube, with fixed attributes from the recipe plus some random affixes.
  • Charms and jewels are magic items too: a Grand Charm with +1 to a skill tree (the skiller) is a prefix.

On drop, the game only rolls affixes that meet three conditions:

  1. The item's type is in the affix's list (column Appears in in the tables).
  2. The item's affix level is equal to or higher than the affix's level (column Level).
  3. There's no other affix from the same group on the item: two defense bonuses, for example, never appear together.

Some affixes only appear on magic items (badge magic only in the tables). Class-specific ones, marked with the class icon, give bonuses to that class's skills.

The item level (ilvl) is the level of the monster that dropped it, or of the area, in the case of chests. The game doesn't use ilvl directly: it calculates the affix level (alvl) using the base's qlvl (its quality level):

  • if ilvl is less than 99 − qlvl/2: alvl = ilvl − qlvl/2;
  • otherwise: alvl = 2 × ilvl − 99.

The ilvl maxes out at 99, and when the base's qlvl is higher than the ilvl, the game uses the qlvl instead. Circlet, Coronet, Tiara, and Diadem have a magic level bonus (+3, +8, +13, and +18) that's added directly to the alvl, which is why they come with better affixes.

D2Evo example: here the Grand Charm has qlvl 1 and skillers are level 50 affixes, so the Grand Charm needs to drop from a level 50 monster or higher to come as a skiller.

The level required to use the item is the highest between the base's and each affix's (column Req.). A strong affix can make the item require a high level even on a simple base.

High-level affixes only drop from high-level monsters: Hell, the Frenzy Lands, and bosses. Magic Find increases the chance of a magic or rare drop, but doesn't change which affixes can appear.
